The Work of Ronald Spicer Showcased at the Philadelphia Sketch Club

Opening at the Philadelphia Sketch Club on Sunday April 4, and on view through June 30, is the work of painter, sculptor, and illustrator Ronald Spicer. An opening reception, which is free of charge and open to the public, will take place on April 4 from 2:00 – 5:00 pm.

Known mainly as a master miniaturist, Spicer was the recipient of a four year scholarship at the Museum School of Philadelphia (currently the University of the Arts) and has also made a name for himself as an illustrator and watercolorist. His distinguished career includes commissions from the Congressional Medal of Honor Society and the Valley Forge Military Academy. His miniature replica of William Penn atop of City Hall became the official William Penn Heritage Week symbol of the city. His commercial commissions include the designing and sculpting of several lines of fantasy and military figures. Spicer’s exhibition at the Sketch Club will include some of his miniature figurines as well as his watercolors.

The Philadelphia Sketch Club is America’s oldest artists club. It is an active regional arts education center that holds workshops, exhibitions, and a permanent collection of American Art from the late 19th and early to mid 20th centuries. Located at 235 South Camac Street (between 12th and 13th, Locust and Spruce), the Philadelphia Sketch Club is conveniently located and accessible by many public transportation routes. Gallery hours for the Philadelphia Sketch Club are Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 1:00 – 5:00 pm; there is no admission charge.

Also on view in the upstairs gallery is An Instructor’s Legacy: The Pedagogical Work and Students of Arthur DeCosta. For further information on exhibitions or on the Philadelphia Sketch Club, call (215) 545-9298 or visit our website at www.sketchclub.org
