Philadelphia Sketch Club to Mount 141st Small Oils Show

The Philadelphia Sketch Club will host an opening reception for the 141st Annual Exhibition of Small Oil Paintings, on Sunday, March 7 from 2 until 5:00 pm. There is no charge to attend the opening reception or the exhibition, which runs through March 28. Regular gallery hours are Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 1:00 to 5:00.

This historic and prestigious exhibition has run continuously since 1865 and attracts many established and emerging artists. The exhibition was originally organized so artists could display small versions of their work with the hope that patrons would order larger paintings. Past award winners include Paulette Van Roekens, John Folinsbee, Alice Kent Stoddard, Arthur Meltzer, Antonio Martino and Franklin Watkins. The first award winner of the exhibition will be presented with the Philadelphia Sketch Club’s historic R. Tait McKenzie Medal.

The jurors for this year’s competition are Jeffrey Carr, Dean of Academic Affairs at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts; Jane Golden, Artistic Director of Philadelphia’s Mural Arts Program; and Frank Hyder, Professor of Painting at Moore College of Art and Design.

The Philadelphia Sketch Club is America’s oldest artist run organization. It is an active regional arts education center that holds workshops, exhibitions, and a permanent collection of American Art from the late 19th and early to mid 20th centuries.
