Dramatic Croquis will be a special event held at the Philadelphia Sketch Club that reaches beyond the usual boundaries of an everyday drawing workshop. This workshop is designed to be a complete immersive experience in life drawing, centered around the senses and guiding participants through shared emotion. The workshop’s dramaturgy centers around the challenge of overcoming discomfort and experiencing the contrast between rising tension and eventual resolution.

The workshop itself utilizes croquis length posed by two life models and is structured in multiple acts, with the models alternating after a set time, while the artists continue to work. The artist’s experience is one without breaks, without rest, with a sole focus on the model in front of them and the work they are creating. Inspiration for this intense experience comes from Greek and Shakespearean tragedies, rituals, sports, concerts, and other social-based experiences which elicit collective emotional tension

Focus on the senses is integral to this workshop. Lighting, sound, scent, and scenography will be carefully choreographed to accompany an abstract story plot, displayed by the models and their surroundings. The multi-act structure of the event will transport participants into a story that they can feel around them and let guide their creative process. This arrangement allows participants to experience a blanched sense of stress and catharsis.

Suggested Dress Code

Theatrical Drawing Environment — Dark Clothing Preferred

Participants are encouraged to wear dark or muted clothing. This helps minimize visual distractions in the studio, ensures that the focus remains on the model’s poses and performance, and will not break the immersion of the session.

Post-drawing Reception

Once the workshop concludes, artists are welcome to stay in the Sketch Club Library, where they may reflect on and discuss their experiences, tip the models, and take time to unwind and process their emotions.

Please Note: This is a Sensory Intense Drawing Experience!

This workshop involves life drawing from nude models. Attendance is intended for adults. Individuals under the age of 18 may participate with prior written consent from a parent or legal guardian. Please inquire with the office for permission slips.
